Glyadyelov Oleksandr

World-renowned Ukrainian documentary photographer and photojournalist. He was born in 1956 in Legnica (Poland). Since 1974, lives in Kyiv. He shoots with an analogue camera on black-and-white film and prints his photos himself. In his works Hlyadielov takes up important social problems of the society: military conflicts, humanitarian crises, street children, prisons, epidemics, drug addiction etc. He has covered military conflicts in Moldova, Nagorno-Karabakh, Chechnya, Kyrgyzstan, Somalia, South Sudan and Ukraine. Since 1997, he has collaborated with Médecins Sans Frontières, an international humanitarian organisation. His photos are used by MSF, HRW, Global Fund, UNAIDS, UNICEF. He is the author of more than 40 solo exhibitions and three books. Lecturer of the Viktor Marushchenko school of photography and the Bird in Flight school. Awards and distinctions: Grand-Prix at Ukrpressphoto'97 for "Abandoned Children" series; Hasselblad prize at European photography contest at Wevey, Switzerland, Images'98; Mother Jones 2001 Medal of Excellence at International Documentary Photography Foundation, San Francisco, USA; "Moving Walls 2002" at Open Society Institute (OSI), New York, USA. Winner of the Shevchenko Prize 2020 for his photo project "Carousel".
