Utagawa Kunisada
(1786–1865)
Utagawa Kunisada was an outstanding Japanese artist of the Edo period. He is one of the first three prominent masters of ukiyo-e (a genre of prints and drawings in Japan, depicting mostly everyday life and landscapes). The artist created about 25,000 ‘plots’ on various topics, including a gallery of portraits of theatre actors, sumo wrestlers, etc. A special place in the artist's work is occupied by shunga (Japanese erotic genre).
